The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit is about as cool as it gets! The Public was, in fact, founded with this program that gets free theater to people who don’t normally have access to it. Each show tours various correctional facilities, shelters, libraries, and community centers throughout NYC. This year, for the first time, ever, Mobile Unit will be launching a national tour bringing the excellent play Sweat to union halls (and even a brewery!) in 5 different states.
Fresh off a 20-stop tour that ended with a detention center in Brooklyn, Mobile Unit is performing that zany Shakespeare classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream for audiences at The Public Theater’s epic space down by Astor Place. The best part of all? The Mobile Unit creates work that makes Shakespeare accessible on more levels than one: not only is it free (!!!) to see this show, but the production is designed to be easy to follow…even if you have a tough time following Shakespearean language and themes.

Mobile Unit’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a scrappy (in all the best ways possible!), hilarious, exciting, vibrant, diverse, inclusive, captivating party that you will be so glad you’re at. Finally! A production of a Shakespeare play that doesn’t make you feel like you’re the only person in the room not in on the secret.
