Annaleigh Ashford and Jake Gyllenhaal blew everyone's effing minds in City Center Encores' concert version of Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George in October and now they are doing the production for 10 weeks, running until April 23. Gyllenhaal admirably fills some really big shoes - those of Mandy Patinkin in the original production. Annaleigh Ashford, taking on the role Bernadette Peters originated, also shines.
A robust supporting cast is chock full of Broadway stars like Brooks Ashmanskas, Claybourne Elder, Robert Sean Leonard, Ruthie Ann Miles, Ashley Park, Max Chernin, Michael McElroy, Andrew Kober, and many more.
Sondheim's musicals aren't for everyone with sophisticated word play and intricate ballads, but a production this well done is definitely worth seeing even if you aren't that into musical theater. It's worth the price of admission alone to see Jakey G in those sexy clothes. He looks GOOD!
Another really awesome thing about this production is that it is re-inaugurating the Hudson Theater, which hasn't been in use since the 1960s!
