Director Casey Nicholaw and the "genie-us" James Monroe Iglehart are aware that we know every word to every song from the Aladdin movie, so they know they have a lot to live up to. The result is a total triumph. Iglehart's performance as the Genie is simply legendary -- you will never see someone more perfect for a role. Nicholaw is known for his bright and energetic direction in shows like The Book of Mormon and Something Rotten. Disney Theatricals generally does a great job with adapting our favorite Disney movies into Broadway musicals and Aladdin is no exception. It is just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids.
Iglehart will be playing the Genie until February 19, when he heads into rehearsals to play Lafayette/Jefferson in Hamilton. The silver lining? Broadway favorite Telly Leung will join the cast as Aladdin himself later this spring (date TBA).
