Mary Jane is New York Theater Workshop's latest knockout. The home of Rent and Hadestown never stops with daring artistic choices that stun the theater world.
In Amy Herzog's brilliant new play Mary Jane, Carrie Coon (you know her from The Leftovers and Fargo) plays a single mother on the verge of collapse as she cares for her 3-year old, who has been chronically sick since birth. Her character seems so in control of the situation and her performance is so subtle that it might take you a couple of days after the curtain call to truly feel the devastation. All four of the other actresses who play characters that come into Mary Jane's life are superb as well. Special shoutout to Liza Colon-Zayas' perfect take on both a home care nurse and high-level hospital physician.
